Artistic Talent

  • Heidi K. Beach Photography - Heidi Beach, one of Chicago's up and coming young photographers, specializes in group and individual potraiture. She also creates work with the look and feel of vintage photographs.

Helpful Publications

  • The Artist's Magazine - A wonderful magazine that offers insightful articles on techniques in various media as well as artists' backgrounds. Also has practical articles that cover the business side of Art. High quality graphics and sharp writing make this a "top shelf" publication. I renew early every year. Website has helpful articles on painting tips and techniques.
  • North Light Book Club - A subsidiary of The Artist's Magazine, the Club offers how-to and inspirational books that cover all media. A good bargain since every fifth book is free and you don't pay shipping/handling or sales tax on prepaid orders. Many of the techniques I use were learned from these books. An invaluable resource.
  • International Artist Magazine - A work of art in itself, this magazine is a virtual gallery of artists from around the world. Easy on the eye and easy to read, this is a beautiful magazine well worth its subscription price (only 6 issues per year). It also offers a monthly art competition with a top prize of $2,000 U.S. Be forewarned, however, that it takes roughly four months to receive your first issue . . . so be patient, it's worth it.

Artist Supplies

  • Cheap Joe's catalog - not always the cheapest but undeniably the best when it comes to customer service and plain ol' friendliness. Unless one of the others offers an astounding rock-bottom price on a really expensive or hard to find item, I always shop here. What's 5¢ on a tube of paint when you get great customer service?
  • Art Supply Warehouse (ASW) catalog - an okay place to do business with. Have used them once or twice but nothing stands out—good or bad.
  • The Jerry's Catalog! - a monstrous tome (for art supplies anyway) that carries just about anything an artist can think of. So much so, in fact, that you have trouble finding things. Have had rude customer service people in the past but last experience was satisfactory. Must have paid attention to the complaint letter I wrote!
  • Pearl Paint - expensive but convenient as they seem to be the only fine art supplier with a store in central Florida. Sales people in the store are extremely helpful but I have never shopped the catalog or website.

Artist Reference - Websites

  • Passionforpaint.com has a monthly newsletter featuring various artists' work, and articles on various painting techniques and subjects. Nice site.
  • Winsor & Newton - has tips and techniques as well as product info on their paint and paper. Search engine.
  • The Artist's Magazine - has helpful painting tips and techniques and search engine that allows you to locate back issues containing articles on particular topic. Have used this many times.
  • Ask Art - a handy site to do research on works of art. Has an extensive library of prints (cause they're for sale, of course) that you can access online.
  • FineArt.Com - auction information and artists' biographies. Useful site for research or plain old surfin'.
